‘Natura Urbana – The Brachen of Berlin’ is a remarkable nature documentary from 2017. In the film, British filmmaker Matthew Gandy tells the turbulent history of Berlin through its plants. In the many open spaces left behind after the war, nature was able to flourish freely. Along the Brachen – railway lines, street corners, and vacant lots – an extraordinary diversity of vegetation from around the world still thrives today.
The documentary takes you on a unique journey through Berlin. Botanists, artists, and seekers of peace show how these untouched areas play a crucial role in the city.
