Bigband ’t Mouvement dives into the captivating world of Charles Mingus, the legendary bassist and composer known for his boundless energy, rich orchestrations, and powerful grooves.

Books could be written about his life and work—he himself penned the eccentric autobiography Beneath The Underdog—but to truly understand Mingus, you have to listen to him. His music navigates between tender melodies like Goodbye Pork Pie Hat, fiery energy, and sharp social criticism in Fables of Faubus, which at the time led to a clash with his record label.

Expect a jazz evening full of dynamic arrangements, raw intensity, and the untamed spirit of Mingus, brought to life by ’t Mouvement.

’t Mouvement is a vibrant big band from Ghent, a colorful ensemble of more than twenty musicians—from trumpeters and saxophonists to trombonists and a dynamic rhythm section. The band was founded a little over 15 years ago as an ensemble within GO! Kunstacademie Gent | De Poel and has since evolved into a beloved big band, now well-known far beyond the Ghent jazz scene. The steady hand of conductor Jonathan Ackaert keeps this enthusiastic bunch in line—well, most of the time.
