On the bridge between East and West
Guests who were waiting for an audience with the caliph in Arab-Andalusian Spain had nothing to complain about. Vocal-instrumental suites provided entertainment and distraction around the clock. Every hour got its musical interpretation, with songs about the love of Allah or about more earthly desires in secret gardens. Let it be clear: in al-Andalus a beautiful and lush culture flourished between the eighth and the 15th century. It ended in 1492, and Emir Boabdil was forced to hand over the keys to the Alhambra to the Catholic royal couple Ferdinand and Isabella. People who had lived in Andalusia for eight centuries suddenly had to leave: to Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya, to Palestine, Egypt and Lebanon,… They continued to cultivate the music as memories of a lost paradise. You will take this lecture on a musical tour d'horizon through North Africa and the Middle East, on the bridge between east and west.
