Moroccan Gnawa without borders
Get to know these hypnotic grooves from Morocco, brought to you by four powerful women who blow a sizzling desert wind through traditional Gnawa. Asmaa Hamzaoui — Morocco’s very first female gimbri master — shook up centuries-old traditions like a boiled egg plunged into an ice bath. With her three-stringed lute and the fiery ensemble Bnat Timbouktou, she flung the doors of gnawa music wide open. Straight to the soul of this North African trance tradition — once the domain of men, now a liberated space filled with spirited rhythms and bold grooves that echo long into the early hours.
