The Lyon‑born double bassist Basile Rahola has become a fixture in the Belgian jazz scene, after previously conquering the Catalan clubs. Alongside his busy career as a sideman, he leads his own quartet, with which he has just released his second album From One Path to Another on the prestigious Igloo Records label.
Expect refined melodies, powerful original compositions, and four musicians with an almost telepathic chemistry. Pianist Wajdi Riahi, drummer Pierre Hurty, and tenor saxophonist Matthias Van den Brande join Basile Rahola in forming a quartet with a strong identity and a warm, mature sound.
The album From One Path to Another breathes calm, maturity, and deep interconnectedness. In each track you can hear the freedom of their interplay: Wajdi’s sparkling improvisations, Matthias’s subtle and enveloping tone, Pierre’s precise and delicate drumming, and Basile guiding his band with wisdom and flexibility.
During the concert, the quartet is briefly joined by Palestinian vocalist Shahd Awawda, whose expressive voice adds extra colour and emotion, bringing the poetry of Mahmoud Darwish to life. This gives the concert a distinct Palestinian cultural dimension and an additional layer of resonance.
