Concert for Sudan

Music as a Balm for a People in Need

Things are not going well in Sudan. The country is plagued by war, violence, and misery. The United Nations describe it as the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. Even the word genocide has been mentioned.

From Ghent, we want to lend a helping hand with this benefit concert. We invited several artists to join forces and support this cause.

Myrddin De Cauter was one of the initiators of this event. From Bach to gipsy to flamenco, Myrddin is a unique talent in Flanders who can conjure astonishing music from his guitar (although he often plays the clarinet as well). Over the years, he has composed several albums.

The Ledebirds are a colourful and diverse group of musicians and singers from, among others, Italy, Palestine, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Iran, Eritrea, and Ledeberg. This time, they will not be led by Mattias Laga, but by the multi-talented musician Dick van der Harst.

Lieven Tavernier is one of the greatest songwriters in the Dutch-speaking world, and the quintessential Ghent bard, as our city so often resonates in his lyrics. He too will perform some of his songs.

Sadig Gibril himself comes from Sudan. In 1999, he obtained his master’s degree in music at the Lemmens Institute. Since 1996, he has also been teaching oud classes at De Centrale. Sadig performs solo or together with some of his musical friends.

Other artists may still join, and it’s not unlikely that some of them will perform together.

The proceeds from the concert will go to the International Red Cross, which remains very active in this troubled country.

We will also talk with a representative of the International Red Cross and MO magazine journalist Tom Claes about the situation in Sudan.
