MAURIZIO GERI SWINGTET - DJANGOFOLLLIES *

Gipsy Swing a l’Italiano

The repertoire of this Swingtet is stylistically inspired by the gypsy traditions of Alsace, the music of Django Reinhardt and contemporary developments in Gipsy jazz. The musical content gives the whole a contemporary dimension, while the (acoustic) instruments evoke a nostalgic retro feeling.
The mix of European gypsy traditions, American swing and Italian popular compositions generated a new, unique sound that winks to the Mediterranean: an interaction between tradition and innovation, between stylistic research and new creation. All this, in combination with the curriculum vitae and the discography of this ensemble, make Swingtet the reference in their homeland. Moreover, it is the only group from Italy that was ever invited to the prestigious French festival dedicated to Django: "Samois sur Seine".

Many years ago Maurizio Geri took the initiative to start a research into new developments within the genre, with this Swingtet as result. He orientated himself to Django Reinhardt, but studied Gipsy jazz up closely by learning from gypsies, playing with them and living together, though  without giving up his own roots. He did not only apply Django's lessons to his guitar playing, but also wanted to gain insight into Django's perfect mix of originality, innovation and tradition, still a source of inspiration for musicians worldwide.

The music of the Swingtet and Maurizio's interviews testify of a free and passionate, firm but open approach, with an emphasis on Django's contribution to jazz, dance music and improvisation. All this in a European context, but always wary of the tradition of the Italian song in mind, which, together with the popular Mediterranean music and that of Tuscany, was Maurizio's first love and at the same time his school as an instrumentalist and composer (L.Pallini)

Maurizio Geri (guitar, vocals), Luca Giovacchini (guitar), Michele Marini (clarinet), Giacomo Tosti (accordion) and Nicola Vernuccio (contra bass).

"Django has done something what few can do. He was so big that he created a music genre (Hot-Club Jazz or Gypsy swing) on his own. He was a virtuoso guitarist with a great sense of lyricism, balance and structure. He took elements from the then existing jazz, musette and gypsy music and remade this in such a convincingly original and timeless way that one can really speak of genius. He is considered one of the most important music reformers of the 20th century. "(Waso De Cauter)
The vzw 'De Vrienden Van Brosella' is the initiator of a rare 'birthday party' of the birth of Django Reinhardt for the 24th time, co-produced with 'Les Riches Claires'. The festival takes place at 29 different locations, including De Centrale.
