Porcelain id is the pseudonym under which Hubert Tuyishime has been releasing unique soulful pop songs since 2020. They have emerged as one of the most promising talents in the Belgian music scene. Porcelain id's poetic songs blend classic pop with lo-fi electronics, always sounding vulnerable, sincere, and authentic. Their debut album, 'Bibi:1,' inspired by their move from a quiet village to the big city, is set to release in February 2024.
The album, influenced by their relocation from the quiet Kempen to Antwerp, resonates with the experience of navigating city traffic during rush hour and trusting to emerge unscathed from the chaos. It pays homage to thrilling encounters with strangers and the friends with whom one can find solace afterward. It tells a tale of being a stranger in a city romanticized for so long, the rejection accompanying that integration, and the false nostalgia with which one later reflects on everything.
At first listen, the entirely English-language BIBI:1 may seem like a abrupt departure from the autobiographical intimacy and lo-fi singer-songwriter music of the earlier EPs Mango and Reprise, especially songs like Vlaanderen. Yet, for Porcelain id, it feels like an organic evolution—toward more abstraction, experimentation, and electronics, never distancing itself but always building on the core of Porcelain id. The new sound is the result of an intense collaboration with producer and partner in crime Youniss Ahamad, who felt immediately challenged despite their different musical backgrounds, responding to Porcelain id's legendary elevator pitch: 'I want to create something between Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Kanye West's Yeezus.'
