Samba Touré

Desert Blues from Mali

Samba Touré

Samba Touré is regarded as one of the finest guitarists from Mali. Born in the Timbuktu region, he continues the musical legacy of Ali Farka Touré, the legendary “king of desert blues.”

More than fifteen years ago, Samba was invited to join Ali Farka Touré’s band. There he was introduced to new styles and rhythms, which he later wove into his own music and reshaped into a personal sound.

His repertoire blends Niger blues, traditional Songhai melodies and Western influences into a harmonious whole. At times his music is gentle and swinging, at other times powerful and captivating, but always marked by his unmistakable signature.

Samba Touré released his first album in 2008. His international breakthrough came in 2013 with the acclaimed album Albala on the Glitterbeat label. He went on to release Gandadiko (2015), Wande (2018), Binga (2021) and Baarakelaw (The Workers) (2024), the latter produced by Mark Mulholland.

On his most recent album, Touré once again presents himself as an artist who does not sing for ancestors or rulers, but for ordinary people: his neighbors, friends and community. His music breathes tribute, dignity and compassion, with touches of humor and lightness.
