TOM & AURÉLIE . DHUN

CD presentation

Dhun – the Hindi word for folk song or melody – embodies the deep Indo-European soul of music. While Western European folk musicians often rely on two familiar scales – the cheerful major and the melancholic minor – the Indian tradition offers an extraordinarily rich palette of scales, known as ragas. Each raga is associated with a specific time of day, a seasonal shift, or an emotional state, carrying with it a deeper meaning and atmosphere.

Tom Theuns and Aurélie Dorzée drew inspiration from these sometimes unusual, yet always enchanting ragas, seamlessly weaving them into familiar European dance forms such as waltzes, mazurkas, bourrées, and polkas. Their hypnotic vocal lines, combined with virtuosic string work, result in a poetic and boundary-defying reinterpretation of traditional dance music.

Discover how the worlds of folk ball and raga merge magically in this unique musical masterpiece.
