WAJD ENSEMBLE . LABYRINTH 2024

Discover Aleppo's musical heritage

Wajd Ensemble skillfully presents a repertoire of instrumental and vocal pieces that beautifully capture the essence of the Sufi heritage of Aleppo (Syria).  Grounded in the esteemed "maqamat" tradition, prevalent in Turkey, Syria, and Egypt, their focus revolves around the captivating art forms of "muwashshah" and "qoudoud,” which Aleppo significantly influenced during the mid-20th century.

With passion, the ensemble delves into the subtleties and the ethereal spiritual aspects found in genres such as ghazal. By selecting lesser-explored and lesser-known musical compositions, Wajd showcases these hidden gems in their distinct style. Their performances are marked by a deep emphasis on improvisation, both vocally and instrumentally, offering an immersive journey for the audience. Within this domain, rhythmic and melodic expressions unfold, weaving a tapestry of sonic beauty that pays homage to the Sufi traditions that flourished in Aleppo.
