Zaveriat is an ensemble rooted in the rich performance traditions of classical Arabic and Sudanese music, bringing these sounds into a contemporary, intercultural musical context. The group draws from the modal traditions of the Middle East and Northeast Africa, where melodic development (maqam), ornamentation and rhythmic patterns (iqa’at) play a central role.
Led by composer and oud player Sadig Gibril, the ensemble explores how these traditions blend with Western chamber music and current musical influences. The oud forms the beating heart of the group, while double bass, percussion and flute engage in an open dialogue between composition and improvisation.
Zaveriat sees itself not only as a performing ensemble, but as a space for musical exchange and innovation. The music emerges from a collective process in which oral tradition, written material and improvisation continuously inspire one another.
