Acoustic Evenings – Cajun Music

/Dirk Powell

We explore the unique repertoire and stylistic characteristics of the Cajun tradition. We learn simple, easily singable songs and discover how this musical style translates to different instruments, with a focus on rhythm, style, and ensemble playing. Dirk himself plays Cajun accordion, fiddle, guitar, and banjo.

Dirk Powell is known as a "musician’s musician" within and beyond American roots music. He learned banjo and fiddle from his grandfather, James Clarence Hay, who was from Kentucky, and has been part of the vibrant Cajun and Creole music community in Louisiana since his youth. He has toured and recorded with artists such as Joan Baez, Rhiannon Giddens, Eric Clapton, Buddy Miller, Loretta Lynn, and Levon Helm.

His solo albums, which often blend traditional foundations with deep emotional expression and original compositions, have had a significant impact worldwide. His song Waterbound has been covered more than 100 times. Dirk is also a highly sought-after producer and the owner of his own studio, Cypress House, located on the banks of Bayou Teche near Breaux Bridge, Louisiana.
