The bağlama is the most popular instrument in Turkish folk music. It has a long neck with a gourd-shaped soundbox, a long narrow neck, and three double strings. While having your own instrument isn't essential (there are several instruments available at De Centrale), it can be useful. You'll begin by exploring the instrument, starting with rhythm, which is the best starting point. Playing the bağlama is more challenging than percussion, for example, and requires a certain level of skill.
İskender Arıcı comes from a musical family and hails from Turkey. He has been teaching at De Centrale for over 15 years. He studied at the music academies of Deniz Güneş and Musa Kurt in Turkey, both renowned saz players. For his lessons, he draws from the rich musical repertoire of Turkish folk music.
