Discover the Magic of South Indian Rhythms and Konnakol

In this workshop, we will explore the South Indian rhythmic system (tala) together. You’ll be introduced to the basic principles of konnakol – the unique rhythmic language of South Indian Carnatic music. Step by step, you will learn the fundamental syllables and how to use them to create rhythmic patterns. Then, you’ll discover how konnakol is integrated with percussion instruments.

Next, we’ll go a step further and dive into the interaction between vocal and instrumental rhythms. In this part, you will experience the synergy between vocal and instrumental expression and learn how to apply these rhythms on your own instrument.

This workshop is suitable for musicians of all genres and levels. You are welcome to bring your own instrument.

Konnakol

Konnakol is a 5000-year-old tradition of vocalized rhythm. Percussionists transmit rhythmic structures using specific syllables, which are combined to create complex rhythmic patterns. Konnakol is an integral part of the South Indian Carnatic music tradition.
