Labyrinth 25 * Exploration and Interpretation of Middle Eastern Music

w/ Ahmad Al Khatib

Content: This workshop focuses on the rich and diverse musical traditions of the Middle East. Participants will explore the stylistic nuances, expressive elements, and performance practices that are essential for an authentic interpretation of this music. The workshop will cover phrasing, ornamentation, rhythmic flexibility, and the interaction between melody and makam (modal systems). In addition to the technical aspects, attention will also be given to the cultural and emotional context of the music.

Bio: Ahmad Al Khatib, born in 1974 in a Palestinian refugee camp in Irbid (Jordan), is a prominent oud player, composer, and educator. He began playing the violin at an early age and later studied the oud under the guidance of Ahmad Abed Qassim. After completing studies in musicology and Western classical cello at Yarmouk University, he worked at the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music in Ramallah, where he eventually became head of department.

Due to the political situation, he was forced to leave Palestine in 2002, but continued to support the conservatory from abroad. In collaboration with Birzeit University, he developed innovative teaching methods and published a groundbreaking instructional book (Sharqiat).

In 2004, he earned a Master’s degree in Music Education from the University of Gothenburg, where he has since taught at the Academy of Music and Drama. Ahmad has founded and led numerous ensembles, including Karloma, Sabil (with Youssef Hbeisch), Samara, the Sada Trio, and the Bosphorus Orchestra, building bridges between Eastern and Western musical traditions.
