Labyrinth 25 * Rhythmic patterns from the Middle-East

w/ Youssef Hbeisch

Content: The workshop aims to provide a solid foundation in the metric structures of Eastern rhythms and to support participants in developing their own artistic and creative sensitivity. It draws on rhythmic knowledge from various cultures, including Arab, Turkish, North African, Persian, and Balkan traditions, with a strong connection to maqam theory. The content focuses on both traditional and contemporary rhythmic forms and their expressive variations, popular rhythms with room for improvisation, accompanying songs and instrumental pieces, rhythmic interpretation of melodies, and the analysis of rhythms within different musical styles.

Bio: Youssef Hbeisch was born in 1967 and began playing percussion at the age of seven. Taught by his brother, he quickly gained recognition as a "child prodigy," performing at weddings and other celebrations. He later studied philosophy and musicology at the University of Haifa. He delved into rhythms from a variety of cultures, including the Middle East, India, Cuba, Africa, and Latin America.

He specializes in Eastern percussion and developed a unique teaching method based on traditional repertoires, enriched with modern techniques, new content, and creative approaches. He blends various musical traditions into his own distinctive style and technique, which is highly regarded.

He has taught at the Edward Said Conservatory (Jerusalem, Ramallah, Bethlehem) and Beit Al Musica (Galilee), and has given masterclasses in Sweden, Denmark, London, Brazil, and elsewhere. Since 1998, he has collaborated with oud master Ahmad Al Khatib, and since 2007, he has performed with Trio Joubran.

He has worked with numerous artists and ensembles, including Simon Shaheen, Süleyman Erguner, Aka Moon, Marie Keyrouz, Lo Còr de la Plana, John Williams, Ibrahim Maalouf, Bratsch, and many others.
