Labyrinth 26

Labyrinth: Modal Musical Traditions of the World

Since 1982, Labyrinth has been building an international platform for music workshops, with a special focus on the rich modal musical traditions of diverse cultures around the world. At its core lies not only the transmission of these centuries-old musical languages, but also the creative cross-fertilization between traditions, a dynamic exchange that continually generates new artistic insights. Alongside the workshops, a series of concerts featuring internationally renowned musicians forms an essential part of the experience.

Labyrinth was founded by Ross Daly, a multi-instrumentalist and composer of Irish origin who has lived in Crete for more than three decades, where he has developed a profound musical practice. What began with seminars and workshops in Athens (1997) gradually evolved into an international network that expanded its activities to locations including Crete, Cyprus, Turkey, Spain, Italy, and Canada.

Since 2024, Labyrinth has also established a presence in Ghent, with De Centrale serving as the first Labyrinth hub in Northern Europe. Following two successful editions, where musicians and enthusiasts gathered in an inspiring intercultural atmosphere, the third edition will take place from 2 to 5 November 2026.

Labyrinth aims to be far more than a series of workshops: it is a vibrant community in which music serves as a powerful force for connection. Labyrinth seeks to introduce people, and young people in particular, to an original and creative approach to traditional music from every corner of the world. As a meeting place for both professional musicians and curious learners, Labyrinth has earned a strong reputation as a pioneer in the promotion of modal and traditional music, and continues to inspire listening, playing, and discovery across all boundaries.
