The Diwan (Divan) is a place of encounter: a salon, council chamber, or cultural circle where people came together for art, exchange, and togetherness.
In the Diwan Tune Sessions we learn one piece from a specific musical tradition each time. We build it up step by step: melody, rhythm, chords, second voice, accompaniment, and singing. Everyone is welcome, regardless of level, background, or age.
For this first Diwan Tune Session, Amin Azizi (°1986, Iran) is our guest. He is a traditionally trained singer and multi-instrumentalist, active in Iran and Belgium. Since 2002, he has been professionally immersed in the Iranian vocal tradition (radif), supplemented with setar and tanbur (his main instrument), studying with, among others, master Ali Akbar Moradi.
He teaches radif and maqam singing, tanbur, setar, and Iranian music theory, and leads workshops and ensemble projects at, among others, KASK and the Royal Conservatory of Ghent. In addition, he works with diverse groups, including refugees, people with disabilities, and other vulnerable communities.
