VISION

Welcome to 'Music Ateliers De Centrale'

De Centrale is one of the few places in Flanders where community music is at the core of the programme. We start from what lives within different communities: diverse musical traditions, practices, and ways of learning and passing on knowledge. Everyone is welcome.

We don’t believe there is one single “right” way to learn music. Each tradition has its own logic and pedagogy, and we want to make that visible and tangible in our courses. For us, the value lies precisely in that diversity: it allows us to offer our sutdents a wide range of tools, approaches, and ways of engaging with music.

We start from the idea that everyone can make music. You don’t need prior experience or have to prove any kind of “talent.” That’s why we work without auditions or exams. We don’t impose fixed trajectories, and we don’t expect everyone to follow the same path or progress at the same pace.

At the same time, we consciously choose quality and commitment. We build workshops led by teachers who are grounded in their practice and bring their own way of working. They inspire and guide participants, each from their own tradition and experience.

In the lessons, we often see a combination of:

  • learning and playing by ear
  • working with sheet music
  • attention to style, technique, and musical identity
  • space to experiment and play together

At the same time, we focus on participation and further development through:

  • workshops and masterclasses throughout the year
  • sharing moments where participants gain experience performing on stage
  • access to instruments (where possible) at a symbolic rental fee

We make a conscious effort to keep our workshops accessible and affordable.

The Muziekateliers aim to be a place where music is not only learned, but also brings people together, connects communities, and creates space for a diversity of voices.
