The Diwan (or Divan) has traditionally been a place of encounter: a salon, council chamber, or cultural circle where people come together for art, exchange, and togetherness. From that tradition, we create with the Diwan Tune Sessions a warm, open space where music is the language that connects us.
During each session, we learn one musical piece from a specific musical tradition. We build the piece step by step: melody, rhythm, chords, second voice, accompaniment, and singing.
Everyone is welcome, regardless of level, background, or age. It’s all about learning together, creating together, and enjoying together.
For this edition, Marijn van der Linden is our guest. He immerses us in the world of choro, a virtuosic and playful Brazilian musical style with deep roots in improvisation and ensemble playing.
Marijn van der Linden (°1981, Curaçao) has been playing guitar since the age of six. He studied classical guitar with Aad Rijkee and Joachim Keppel, and later electric guitar with various teachers at SKVR in Rotterdam. At eighteen, he moved to Tilburg to study at the Fontys Conservatory, where he graduated as a Teaching Musician in guitar, specializing in improvised music. One of his most important mentors was Willem Kühne.
During his studies and career, Marijn took masterclasses in the Netherlands and Brazil with, among others, Luciana Rabello, Mauricio Carrilho, Nelson Faria, Jayme Vignoli, and Lee Konitz. His musical influences are broad, including artists such as Sylvain Luc, Hamilton de Holanda, Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Lula Galvão, and many others.
