Labyrinth 26 * Radif . Sounds from the Iranian Tradition

In this workshop, participants are introduced to the rich and refined world of classical Iranian music. At its core lies the radif, the traditional repertoire in which generations of melodic motifs and compositions have been collected, preserved, and transmitted. This musical heritage forms the foundation of the various modal systems (dastgahs and avazes) and provides a key to understanding the Persian musical tradition.

Drawing on this repertoire, we explore the characteristic melodic development, subtle microtonality, and expressive performance practices that define this music. The workshop focuses on melody, phrasing, and improvisation, with particular attention to the ways in which music unfolds within a modal framework.

Alongside learning repertoire, emphasis is placed on listening, interaction, and the gradual deepening of musical understanding. The workshop therefore offers not only a practical introduction to Iranian music, but also insight into the aesthetic principles and traditions that underpin it.

This workshop is open to musicians of all instrumental backgrounds.

Hossein Behroozinia is an internationally renowned master of the barbat (the Persian oud), as well as a composer and researcher of classical Iranian music. He began his musical education at an early age at the Tehran Conservatory and has been performing on international stages for more than forty-five years. With over two thousand concerts worldwide, he is widely regarded as one of the foremost contemporary ambassadors of Persian music.

In recognition of his artistic achievements, he has received numerous honours, including the highest cultural distinction awarded by Iran’s Ministry of Culture. As a performer, researcher, and teacher, he has earned a distinguished reputation as a bridge between the classical tradition and contemporary musical expression.
