In this workshop, participants are introduced to the rich and sophisticated rhythmic world of Hindustani music. At its core are the talas, the cyclical rhythmic structures that form the foundation of this tradition. In a clear and accessible manner, Niti Ranjan Biswas demonstrates how these rhythms are constructed, how they are experienced, and how they function within a musical context.

This workshop is not intended exclusively for percussionists. Anyone with an interest in music, rhythm, and ensemble playing is welcome. Participants will work not only with instruments but also with the body as an instrument. Through clapping, reciting, and singing bols (rhythmic syllables), they will develop a deeper understanding of timing, structure, pulse, and musical expression.

Through hands-on exploration, participants will discover how complex rhythmic patterns can be experienced not only intellectually and technically, but also intuitively. Listening, repetition, and interaction form the key to a living understanding of the Hindustani rhythmic tradition.

An invitation to experience rhythm not merely as something to be counted or played, but as a living and dynamic musical language that can be understood from within.

Niti Ranjan Biswas is a leading tabla player based in Amsterdam, performing on stages around the world. He has collaborated with prominent musicians from the Indian classical music tradition and has performed with renowned ensembles such as the Metropole Orkest and the Netherlands Wind Ensemble. In his playing, he bridges the rich rhythmic heritage of Hindustani music with influences from jazz and world music.

In addition to his work as a performer, he is a dedicated and inspiring teacher. He teaches at Codarts Rotterdam and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where he shares his knowledge of tabla and rhythm with a new generation of musicians.
