After their concert on Monday, May 18th, Istanbul-based trio Şenkop invites you into their musical world through a hands-on workshop exploring traditional Anatolian folk music.
The session begins with learning one or two traditional songs together as a starting point, digging into what makes these songs tick — where they come from, how they breathe, and what they carry with them. The first part focuses on tavır, the regional character and feel that varies so much across Anatolia's different landscapes.
Participants will explore makam theory, microtonal approaches, ornamentation, regional rhythms, and bowing techniques in a way that feels grounded and practical rather than academic. Everything stays connected to real music and real playing.
The second part opens things up. Şenkop shares how they approach traditional material in their own work — harmony, rhythm, and arrangement — and invites participants to join in. For anyone curious about how a folk melody can find a new life without losing its roots, this is where the workshop really comes alive.
All instruments and levels of experience are welcome. Whether you are deeply familiar with Anatolian music or just beginning to discover it, there is a place for you here.
Şenkop is Cem Mazlum (Percussion), Rûbar Dindar (Keyboard & Vocals) and Ruşen Can Acet (Kabak Kemane & Vocals)
