The concept of makam may at first seem complex or even somewhat intimidating. This workshop, however, is based on the conviction that this rich musical tradition can be made accessible to everyone: step by step, through a clear and carefully structured introduction, even for those with no prior knowledge.

Murat Aydemir guides participants through the foundations of the Turkish makam tradition. He explores the construction of melodic structures, their relationship to rhythmic patterns, and the role of improvisation. Through examples, analysis, and live demonstrations in various makams and compositional forms, a musical system gradually unfolds that is at once refined, coherent, and vibrant.

Drawing on his acclaimed book Turkish Music Makam Guide, Aydemir leads participants through this rich modal landscape. His many years of experience as a tanbur player, researcher, and teacher are reflected in an accessible and practice-oriented approach in which listening, understanding, and experiencing go hand in hand.

Participants will have the opportunity to explore a wide range of aspects of the makam tradition, from ornamentation and phrasing to melodic development and expression, and to discover how a makam unfolds, evolves, and acquires meaning from within.
