ORIENTAL PERCUSSION (DARBUKA & BENDIR)

Hilde De Clercq

The darbuka (a goblet drum) and the bendir (a frame drum) are played in the Middle East, the Maghreb, and the Balkan countries. The lessons are conducted in groups, with a strong emphasis on ensemble playing and enjoyment. Musical background is not necessary; we primarily work by ear.

Hilde De Clercq has studied both Western music and Eastern percussion and singing, with a passion for Turkish music. As a percussionist, singer, and movement artist, she has been and continues to be active in various ensembles. She regularly accompanies Turkish musicians on percussion in their concerts in Belgium and has toured in Turkey and Europe. She is involved in various activities, including creating children's performances, working as a vocal coach for 'Allez, Chantez!', and programming various Turkish music channels for the digital music provider Stingray. Since 1996, she has been a darbuka and bendir instructor at the Centrale.
