ORIENTAL PERCUSSION (DARBUKA & BENDIR)

Wim Ricour

The darbuka (a goblet drum) and the bendir (a frame drum) are played in the Middle East, the Maghreb, and the Balkan countries. The lessons are conducted in groups, with a strong emphasis on ensemble playing and enjoyment. Musical background is not necessary; we primarily work by ear.

Wim Ricour is a percussionist and multi-instrumentalist based in Ghent. As a self-taught musician, he has mastered various ethnic percussion instruments and styles over the years.

His focus is mainly on Middle Eastern rhythms, but his repertoire continues to expand. From the South American cajón to the Nigerian udu and the Indian tabla, with his extensive collection of ethnic instruments, he brings authentic rhythms and colors from folk and world music to life.

He is a permanent member of The Boat Band and De Ledebirds and also plays with Flamenca Ghent, Omar Cortegana, Sidi Caravan, Brazzmatazz, and Tristan Visser.
